The crown chakra (Sahasrara) is our gateway to higher realms of consciousness. It’s Sanskrit name, Sahasrara, means thousandfold, a direct reference to the thousand- petalled lotus, sacred to Hindus. According to ancient tradition, this thousand- petalled lotus sits at the crown of the head and represents enlightenment, wholeness and infinity.

By tapping into the Sahasrara (crown chakra) we can live more spiritually, bringing a sense of the sacred into our everyday life. By connecting with our crown chakra, we can become more aware and thus more mindful of our thoughts, feelings, actions and bodies. As this awareness develops, our sensitivity grows. This increased psychic sensitivity enhances a deeper connection with ourselves and with others, allowing us to live in a more soulful and spiritual way. Through connecting with our crown centre, we can begin to find value and depth in the most simple of our daily experiences.

When the Sahasrara is deficient in energy, we tend to lose touch with our innate spirituality and deal with life as though we only exist in the physical realm. We begin to suffer from internal states of restlessness and anxiety and may battle with excessive materialism and addictions. (Some turn to alcoholic spirits whilst looking for spirit!) Through regular practice of dancing the Crown Sahasrara, we can begin to transcend the ego and acknowledge the existence of a higher self or higher power. As we open the gates to higher levels of awareness a spiritual connection can be rediscovered which can bring wisdom, meaning and direction into everyday life.

When the crown Sahasrara is excessive in energy we can become completely addicted to spiritual pursuits, often losing all sense of connection with the realities of daily life. Caught up in a continual search for altered states of consciousness, our experiences can’t be fully realized due to a disassociation from the body and the physical realm. One aim of this dance, therefore, is to ground these spiritual experiences by literally embodying them in the physical self. As this energy becomes internalized through the Chakradance experience we can begin to experience our own spiritual essence, whilst manifesting inspirations and spiritual lessons into everyday life.

Awakening the Crown Sahasrara opens us to what Carl Jung called the Self, the archetype representing wholeness and completion. Thus the crown chakra is the gateway to your own true self, and working with this energy centre can guide us towards self-realisation. When our true self manifests in this world, we have reached our truest potential and unified our personality as a whole. The full birth of the Self via this strong connection and awakening of the Crown gives us an entirely different attitude towards life, and a truly enlightening transformation has taken place.

When are Sahasrara is truly awakened, life becomes more joyful. As we move more fully into the present through mindfulness, the binds of the past and the worries of the future lessen their hold. Every moment is soulfully lived, life becomes simpler, and yet more meaningful.

Everyday ways to balance Sahasrara

Wear the colour violet, or bring the colour into your home. Try and put some time aside every day to make a connection to Spirit … a simple prayer, thanks, or even asking for guidance. Bring a sense of the sacred into your every-day life (light a candle and reflect, give thanks for meals etc.) Meditate!

Sahasrara crystals

Clear quartz, amethyst and diamond are the crystals that are said to resonate with the Crown. Clear quartz brings clarity of consciousness, amethyst facilitates spirituality and contentment, while the diamond represents purity, perfection and inspiration.

Sahasrara oils

Lavender, myrrh, hyacinth, and bay laurel are all essential oils corresponding to Sahasrara. Lavender enhances meditation, hyacinth has hypnotic qualities and laurel is associated with divine wisdom and prophecy. Myrrh has been valued for thousands of years and is believed to hold divine healing powers. It was once considered more precious than gold!
